The history of the Gromada Hotel in Piła begins in the 1970s. Back then, Piła practically had no hotel infrastructure. The destruction caused by World War II largely contributed to this - it is estimated that 80% of the urban buildings were damaged.
1975
In 1975, Piła became the capital of the new Piła province, which, combined with its location at the intersection of important national roads connecting southern and central Poland with the northern part of the country, influenced the decision of the then authorities to build an elegant and presentable hotel. The decision was made to build the hotel on the ruins of St. Janow Church, destroyed as a result of war. At the time, it had laid in ruins for 30 years. This brought about a lot of controversy. The end result was a compromise between the church administrator (the Gorzów curia) and Communist authorities. The latter gave permission to build a new church in the Górny district in exchange for the possibility of demolishing the ruins. In December 1975, the ruins of the church were blown up. St. Janow, July 19, 1978. The cornerstone was laid for the construction of the hotel.
Construction of the site.
The general contractor, responsible for basic construction and assembly works, was the Construction Conglomerate in Piła. The conglomerate was assisted by subcontractors, mostly from the Piła and Poznań provinces. The project was designed by the General Construction Design Office "Miastoprojekt" in Koszalin, under the supervision of Master Engineer Henryk Firlej. The construction of the site took 9 years. The official opening took place on June 17, 1987. Originally, the hotel was named "Rodło", now it's Gromada Hotel Piła. This fifty-seven meter tall building has 12 floors, and stands out for its size, mass, and architecture.
Development
To make hotel guests' stay more enjoyable and convenient, shops were opened in the service part of the hotel: a confectionery, a delicatessen with its own products, as well a Pewex, Cepelia and Ruch (all communist era chains). Additionally, there was a currency exchange office, a Gromada Tourist Service Office of the Provincial Branch , a sauna, a hairdressing salon, a solarium, and massage rooms. The hotel staff was trained by hoteliers from Poznań, and the waiters were educated in a specially newly formed class at the local Gastronomic Trade School. An interesting fact is that the Rodło Hotel was one of the few facilities of this type adapted to serve guests with disabilities - appropriate amenities were installed in the rooms, bathrooms, and parking lot.
Gromada Hotel Chain
During the period of sentimental tourism from the Federal Republic of Germany to Poland, the hotel accommodated a number of German groups. These groups would later travel to Warmia and Mazury. A person who significantly contributed to the establishment of the hotel was the former Vice President of OST Gromada - Henryk Skoczylas. In general, it can be said that he has an enormous influence on the creation of the entire so-called Gromada hotel chain. Among those who officially opened the hotel were its first Director - Bogusław Janicki, deputy director. Maria Twaróg (current vice-chair of the Supervisory Board) and Danuta Zaniewska, later the deputy director of the hotel in Łomża.
Nowadays
Currently, the hotel can accommodate 279 people in 170 rooms. Guests have at their disposal a hotel restaurant, cafe, pastry shop, and 5 air-conditioned conference rooms, the largest of which has a capacity of 250. In 2022, the 11th floor of the hotel was renovated and put to use, and has since met the needs of the most demanding guests.
